Four talented bands clashed on Tuesday evening as they fought for their chance to play to the crowds at Kirklees Festival in the Park on Sunday 18th July. As official sponsors of ‘Alive Battle the Bands 2010,’ we sent wewow’s very own Oliver Mountain down to The Little Buddha Bar in Huddersfield to check out the talent and get the inside scoop on all the action;
“An excited buzz filled the air in The Little Buddha Bar on Tuesday evening as the crowd gathered to watch four up-and-coming bands battle it out for a chance to play in front of huge crowds at the Kirklees Festival in the Park this Sunday. Two bands have already progressed from Monday’s heat and two more bands will progress from tonight’s acts.
The night kicked off with young Emo/Punky looking band going by the name of Area 67. Sounding reasonably rehearsed in parts Area 67 got off to a good start but nerves soon hit and, struck by a technical fault, the young talent struggled to keep one of their slower tracks together. Nevertheless, high marks were in order for performance, thanks to thrilling solos by the lead guitarist who confidently rocked out with his guitar around the back of his head and whilst sliding on his knees into the crowd. If this band doesn’t make it through this year, they’ll be straight back into the rehearsal room.
Area 67 were followed by three talented brothers, Fletch, Chris and Dan, also known as Hand Made Hands. Fresh from recording their album the brothers gave a highly-charged performance, winning the approval of both the crowd and judges. Their sound was crisp and tight and reflected their musical influences, which they say include The Eels and Super Furry Animals, whilst the band joked of being referred to as the next Hanson.
Next up were three piece band The EGBGs; who gave a gutsy performance, resembling a young Luke of the Kooks. Their tracks were strong, with echos of Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and 1990’s Brit pop, and the catchy chorus of ‘Supermarchet’ was a deffinate crowd pleaser.
The battle was brought to a close by The Full Girth Explosion, who ended the night on a high with an up-beat and engaging set. The four piece, Huddersfield-based band let their experience show as they gave a polished performance which went onto win them a place in the Festival in the Park line up. ‘Gangster GTI’ went down particularly well with the crowd, who we’re urged to move forward and get involved.
Hand Made Hands’ energetic set grabbed them the remaining place in Festival’s line up, where they will join; The Tabbs, Champagne for Enemies and The Full Girth Explosion. Congratulations guys!”
